Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do you accept health insurance for counseling?
A number of health care plans, including BCBS, United Health, and Tufts are accepted. Because benefits and eligibility vary according to individual plans, it is a good idea to get the details directly from your insurer prior to seeking care.
2. If I don't have insurance, or choose not to use it, what are your fees?
Current fees are $150 for the initial session, and $125 thereafter.
3. Can you bill my insurance if you are not in my network?
In this case, you will pay the full fee for the session, then be provided with paperwork to submit to your insurance company so that you may be reimbursed directly.
4. How long are sessions?
The first visit, for assessment purposes, is about 60 minutes long. Follow up sessions last for about 45-50 minutes.
5. Do you provide clinical supervision or consultation?
I do! The fee is $25 per 15 minute block.
6. How long will I be in treatment, and how often do we meet?
That depends on your issues and your goals, and is discussed on a case-by-case basis. You may have as few or as many sessions as needed, at varying intervals depending on how things are progressing.
7. What if I have an emergency once I become a client?
Clients have access to Lori's personal cell phone number that may be used in case of a crisis situation. Lori also has coverage arrangements with other mental health professionals if she will be away for an extended period and unavailable.
8. What age groups do you treat?
Services are provided for clients aged 18 and up.
9. Once I am a client, will you be available to see my spouse, daughter, mother, etc?
Family members may be an integral part of treatment and are invited to join in sessions if requested to do so by the client. Due to issues of boundaries and maintaining neutrality, Lori will generally not treat other family members for their own personal therapy while services are ongoing.
10. I've never been to therapy before...what happens during a session?
Basically, you talk and Lori listens. Lori will help you clarify thoughts, explore and express feelings, and generate solutions to issues that you have identified. There are no particular techniques or procedures that take place during sessions.
11. What do those letters after your name mean?
MSW means Lori has a Master's in Social Work. LICSW means Licensed, Independent, Clinical Social Worker, licensed by the state of Rhode Island. Obtaining the LICSW credential involves years of supervised clinical training and practice as well as an examination, and requires many hours of yearly professional development to maintain.
12. Can you prescribe medication for me?
No, only a medical doctor can prescribe medication. Medication is sometimes used in conjunction with talk therapy. If, during the course of treatment, you and Lori feel that a medication trial might be beneficial, Lori will be pleased to coordinate care with your primary care physician or psychiatrist. Referrals can be provided if needed.
13. Where is your office located?
Lori does not currently maintain an office for meetings. All sessions take place through a secure video-chat system.
